Iohannis: Romania supports Turkey's EU integration process

Romania supports Turkey's integration into the European Union, on Wednesday said president Klaus Iohannis, at the Cotroceni Palace.

"Romania supports Turkey in its EU integration process. I believe that both the European union and Turkey would have but to win in all fields, from the economic development to the regional stability, following Turkey's European integration," said Klaus Iohannis in the joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan thanked Romania for the support given to Turkey's EU integration.

"I guess that in the next period Romania's support will be more determined in this process of EU integration of Turkey," he said.

President Iohannis said he had a discussion with his Turkish counterpart on the international geo-political evolutions, with an accent on the immediate neighbourhood, and that the stage of the implementation of the NATO action plan for the increase of the operational capacity was analysed.

"The consolidation of the collective defence within the NATO is a joint objective of Romania. I told my Turkish counterpart that his country's participation in the command and control structures of the NATO to be unfolded on Romania's territory would be of a special importance in our country," the head of state said, after the meeting with his Turkish counterpart.

"The NATO belonging, the cooperation in many fields, the economic one in particular, is linking us," Iohannis added.

The head of state said that two of the dialogue's main topics were considering the security in the region and the economic cooperation.

"Our common belief is that a safe and prosperous region is beneficial to both our countries and citizens," said Iohannis.

In his turn, the Turkish president said his country would give the necessary support for the creation of the NATO command centres in Romania.

"Our solidarity works on other levels, too, for instance on the military one. We are together within the NATO, and our collaboration within the Alliance is based on the solidarity we share which is going to continue resolutely in the future as well (...) We will give the necessary support after the talks at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, at the Defence Ministry, and our viewpoint is positive and we shall send you our answer as soon as possible,' Erdogan said.
